Oscar Pistorius will be released from prison to house arrest on Tuesday of next week, according to the South Africa Parole board.
Pistorius was sentenced to five years after being found guilty of culpable homicide for shooting dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentines Day in 2013.He shot herthrough a locked bathroom door but said he thought she was an intruder
A South African law means that Pistorius is eligible for release because he has served a sixth of his sentence. He was due to leave prison on August 21, exactly 10 months on from his sentencing.
But Justice Minister Michael Masutha unexpectedly stepped in to halt the move, saying the parole board had acted prematurely by setting the release date.
Reevas family had previously said that the ten month prison sentence was not enough for his crime. In a statement they said:
“We have forgiven Mr Pistorius even though he took the life of our precious daughter Reeva. Our lives will never be the same again as live with the sadness of her death every day.Reeva had so much to offer this world and we were all robbed of her life when she was killed.”
It recently emerged that two South Africans who rented the former home ofPistoriuswere forced to apologise after posting a video they made of the property, including inside the bathroom where the Paralympian shot Reeva Steenkamp.
Tell us your thoughts, is this release too soon considering the crime?
